The Manu National Park covers an area of around 1.5 million hectares. It is a wildlife sanctuary located in Peru, between the regions of Madre de Dios and Cusco. Around 5,000 plant species and 1000 animal species inhabit the park. The harpy eagle, the giant river otter, the jaguar, and the black caiman are among the most emblematic species of the reserve. The park is also famous for being the home of hundreds of species of butterflies.
The Pre-Incan and Incan ruins found in the Manu prove that the area has been inhabited for a very long time. The Paititi local legend, which claims that the ‘Lost City of the Incas’ is situated somewhere inside the Manu, has attracted both explorers and researchers to the zone. Currently, just a few indigenous groups live there permanently. While some of them have sedentary lifestyles, others lead nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyles.
