Tour Details

The Tambopata National Reserve was created in the year 2000. It is located south of the Madre de Dios region, in the districts of Tambopata and Inambari. It has an approximate extension of around 278 284 hectares. The main objective of the reserve is to protect the biodiversity of the zone and to promote the sustainable use of the natural resources by the native population.

Tambopata is one of the most biodiverse places on earth. It is home to many endangered species, such as the giant river otter. Scientists have identified around 169 species of mammals, 103 species of amphibians, 205 species of fish, and 1200 species of butterflies. Also, approximately 1255 plant species have been identified in the reserve.

This Tambopata jungle tour is perfect for exploring the most famous places of this nature reserve. You will be navigating on the numerous oxbow lakes of Tambopata. Also, you will visit the beautiful macaw clay licks, where hundreds of birds gather each day.

Itinerary

Day 1Puerto Maldonado - Tambopata Lodge

We will pick you up from the bus terminal or the airport of Puerto Maldonado. Then, we will transfer you to our office in Puerto Maldonado, where we will brief you about the itinerary of the next days. Afterwards, we will drive to the local port, where we will board a boat to our lodge located in the Tambopata National Reserve.

You will be navigating on the incredible Tambopata river. You will spot animals such as turtles, caimans, and capybaras on the river’s banks. Once we arrive at our lodge, you will be accommodated in your room. Then, you will have a traditional Amazonian lunch.

After lunch, you will have a guided hike through the nearby rainforests and river banks. Then, we will return to the lodge to have dinner and spend the rest of the night.

Day 2Tambopata Lodge - Macaw Clay Lick - Tambopata Lodge

We will wake up early in the morning, around 4 am. Then, we will board a boat to visit the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick. This place is a gathering point for hundreds of macaws and parrots. These birds come to the clay lick to eat minerals, which are essential for their health. After spending some time admiring the macaws and parrots, we will return to the lodge to have breakfast.

We will spend the rest of the day relaxing in the lodge. You can also take a nap on our hammocks located near the rainforest. After lunch, we will have a canopy walk. This walkway is located at an approximately height of 30 meters, so you will get amazing views of the surrounding rainforest.

After the canopy walk, we will return to our lodge to have dinner. Then, you will have a nocturnal guided hike through the nearby jungle.

Day 3Tambopata Lodge - Lake Sandoval - Tambopata Lodge

After having a delicious breakfast, we will hike to Sandoval Lake. During this short trek, you will learn about the numerous plant species of the reserve. Our professional tour guide will explain to you the importance these plants have for the local communities. Once at Sandoval Lake, you will be able to spot numerous giant otters swimming and fishing in the water’s lake. We will have lunch on a campsite near the lake.

In the afternoon, we will spend some time admiring the beautiful sunset. Then, we will return to the lodge to have dinner. After dinner, you will have another night tour through the surrounding rainforest.

Day 4Tambopata Lodge - Puerto Maldonado

We will leave the lodge early in the morning. Then, we will board a boat to visit the Parrot’s Clay Lick, another gathering point of the Tambopata Reserve’s birds. After spending some time appreciating the multicolored spectacle created by the macaws and parrots, we will return to our lodge to have breakfast.

After having breakfast, we will visit a nearby native community. You will learn about their traditions and customs. Then, we will have a delicious lunch. Afterwards, we will leave the lodge and board a boat to Puerto Maldonado city. Once there, we will visit the local market, where you will be able to buy some souvenirs.

Finally, we will return to our office in Puerto Maldonado. From there, we will transfer you to the bus terminal or the local airport, depending on your choice.
