The Tambopata National Reserve is located in the Peruvian Amazonia. This nature reserve was established by the Peruvian government in 1989. It is home to hundreds of animal and plant species. Tambopata comprises several ecosystems, which range from lowland rainforests to savannas.
Tambopata is the second largest reserve in Peru, after the Manu National Park. It covers a surface of 274,690 hectares. Tambopata lacks major human settlements. It is only inhabited by small native communities, such as the Ese Eja people.
The reserve is located in the southern section of the Peruvian Amazonia, south of the Madre de Dios river. It covers the whole Tambopata river basin. Almost all tours start at Puerto Maldonado city, located at the confluence of the Madre de Dios river and the Tambopata river. Without a doubt, Tambopata is one of the most beautiful places in the Amazon rainforest.
