Tambopata National Reserve is located in the Madre de Dios region, in southeastern Peru, near the Brazilian border. It is one of the main tourist attractions in the Peruvian Amazon region. The reserve is home to a great diversity of plants and animals.
The nature reserve is famous for its beautiful lakes, such as the Sandoval, Sachavacayoc, and Valencia lakes. Other great places to visit in Tambopata are the clay licks, also known as collpas. Hundreds of macaws and parrots gather at the clay licks to eat minerals, thus creating a colorful and noisy spectacle.
Although the Tambopata National Reserve does not have larger human populations, it is inhabited by some small native communities. These communities have a distinctive culture that differentiates them from the rest of the Peruvian population. Currently, the reserve is inhabited by the Eje Esa, Harakbut and Matsiguenka communities.
