The Tambopata National Reserve is a protected area located in the Madre de Dios region, in Peru. It has a total extension of 274,690 hectares. The reserve is home to numerous endangered species, such as the giant river otter and the black caiman.
The average temperature in Tambopata ranges between 10°C (50°F) and 38°C (100°F). The most representative ecosystem of the reserve are the tropical rainforests. Tambopata has two main watersheds, which are formed by the Tambopata and Heath rivers. Both rivers originate at the Bolivian Plateau.

Puerto Maldonado city

We will pick you up from the bus terminal or the airport of Puerto Maldonado. Then, we will go to our office in Puerto Maldonado, where we will give you a short briefing about the itinerary of the following days. Then, we will go to the local port to board a motor boat to Lake Sandoval. You will be able to spot giant otters, turtles, and aquatic birds on the lake’s shores.
We will stop on a campsite near Sandoval Lake to have lunch. Then, we will go to our eco lodge located in the Tambopata National Reserve. Our staff will accommodate you in your room. Afterwards, you will have dinner and spend the rest of the night in the lodge.
After having breakfast early in the morning, we will visit the Loero community. We will learn about their traditional farming methods, as well as their local customs. We will stop amidst the tour to have a traditional Amazonian lunch at Loero.
We will return to the lodge in the afternoon. After having dinner, you will have a night hike through the nearby rainforests. You will be able to spot some elusive nocturnal animals such as black caimans, insects, and snakes.
We will leave the lodge very early in the morning. Then, we will go to the famous Tambopata Macaw Clay Lick. At this unique place, hundreds of macaws and parrots gather each day. These birds come to the clay to eat minerals, which are essential for their health. We will watch the flocks of birds from a nearby bird observatory.
Afterwards, we will return to our eco lodge to have a delicious Amazonian lunch. Then, we will walk to the beautiful Laguna Chica, a small bird sanctuary populated by numerous species of toucans. We will spend some time at the lagoon appreciating its unique flora and fauna. Then, we will return to the lodge to have dinner and rest.
We will have a traditional Amazonian breakfast at the lodge. Then, we will trek through the beautiful rainforests of the Tambopata National Reserve. During the trek you will be able to spot the most emblematic animals of the Amazon rainforest, such as sloths, capuchin monkeys, squirrel monkeys, macaws, parrots, and peccaries. We will stop amidst the trek to have lunch. Then, we will return to the lodge.
On this day, we will have walked around 6 km (3.7 miles). Once we arrive at the lodge, you will have a traditional Amazonian dinner. You will have the rest of the night to relax on the lodge’s installations.
We will leave our lodge after having a delicious breakfast. Then, we will visit the highest bird watching tower in the Peruvian Amazonia. This tower has a height of around 46 meters (150 feet). Once at the towe’s top, we will be able to get amazing views of the surrounding rainforests. Afterwards, we will return to our lodge to have lunch.
After lunch, we will visit Laguna Chica one more time to spot peacocks and woodpeckers. Afterwards, we will return to the lodge to have dinner and spend the rest of the night.
We will have breakfast early in the morning. Then, we will hike to Lake Cocococha. We will be walking for around 5 km (3 miles) before reaching the lake. Cocococha is famous for the numerous birds that inhabit the surrounding forests. We will stop near the lake’s shores to have lunch.
Then, we will return to the lodge. After dinner, you will have a night canoe trip, where you will be able to spot some alligators.
After having breakfast, we will leave the lodge. On this day, you will have a botanic tour of the rainforests of Tambopata. You will learn about the unique properties the Amazonian plants have. Our professional tour guide will explain to you how the native populations use these plants to create medicines. After having a picnic lunch, we will return to the lodge.
Once in the lodge, you will have the rest of the afternoon to relax. You can take a nap on the hammocks located near the rainforest. At night, you will have a delicious traditional dinner. Then, you will have another nocturnal hike through the surrounding jungles.
After having breakfast early in the morning, we will leave the lodge. Then, we will return to the city of Puerto Maldonado. Once there, we will transfer you to the bus terminal or the local airport, depending on your choice.
